Two weeks after visiting Costa Maya on a family cruise, Mexico's Yucatan was hit with the devastating category 5 Hurricane Dean. People were going to the aid of Mahahual and Costa Maya but no one was providing medical help.
Our first mission was to get a wheelchair to a little boy, Ivan, who lived in the community. He inspired us to find a way to provide health care in an area where little was provided.
We flew into Cancun and drove 5 hours south to bring Mahahual medical supplies. In Lak'ech Project grew in both ideas and spirit from that point forward. Providing for the medical needs of the Yucatan Peninsula has become our passion.
We work closely with communities to find out what supplies are needed. We seek out donations from hospitals and doctors offices in the US to provide medical supplies. We are currently writing grants to help accomplish these goals. We have a large supply of donated medical goods which we provide to other nonprofit groups for their own mission trips.
We have volunteer doctors, nurses and other medical care in impoverished areas. Usually 2-3 day clinics are held to see as many patients as possible.
